PROGRAMMA PER GIOVANI RICERCATORI "RITA LEVI MONTALCINI"

Classic, Romantic, “Italic”. Primitive Antiquities, History and Imagination in Italian Literature (18th–19th centuries)

Starting date: 01/04/2023
Duration in months: 36
Call identifier: Programma per giovani ricercatori “Rita Levi Montalcini”
Keywords: 19th Century, 18th Century, Giacomo Leopardi, Vincenzo Cuoco, Alessandro Verri, Philology, History, History of Disciplines
PI: Martina Piperno

Abstract
This project will reconstruct the meaning and the spreading of the myth of Italic origins in 18th- and 19th-century Italian literature. The pre-Roman age is a part of the ancient period which does not seem to have the same authoritative voice as the “Classics”; rather, the moderns experienced it through fortuitous findings, partial fragments and incomprehensible languages. Its mysterious nature generated an epistemic challenge and tickled the literary imagination, attracting the attention of poet-philologists like Leopardi or novelist-historiographers like Verri and Cuoco. The reception of so-called “Classic” antiquity is (almost) always a transmission of cultural privilege; the evocation, instead, of pre-Roman antiquities can be a symbol of alterity, diversity, exoticism and loss. This project will combine the history of studies of antiquity, literary criticism and literature; in doing so, it will define a largely unexplored area of the reception of the ancient in Italy.
